/ˈsʌnbri/ (say 'sunbree)

a town in southern central Victoria, north-west of Melbourne.
Sunbury lies in territory traditionally inhabited by the Wuywurrung people. The first Europeans in the district were members of John Pascoe Fawkner's 1835 expedition. In 1836 the Jackson brothers, who had travelled with that party, and explorer George Evans, set out from Williamstown to find sheep pastures in the area. The Emu Bottom run was taken up by Evans; its farmhouse, begun in 1836, is probably the oldest homestead in Victoria. The town was surveyed in 1851 and the railway from Melbourne opened in 1859. Sunbury was a wine-producing district in the 1920s, an industry that has experienced a revival in recent years. The town grew rapidly from the mid-1960s and is now an outer suburban satellite of Melbourne.
